Big Ambergris Cay Environmental Impact Assessment, Turks and Caicos

The owners of Big Ambergris Cay applied to the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands for permission to develop the island into a self-sustaining community with full amenities and tourist attractions. Three design alternatives were developed for the island, the largest of which included three hotel/resort facilities and a multi-faceted marina.

Coastal Systems International, Inc. conducted numerous, in-depth site investigations that included bathymetric and topographic surveys, cataloging of marine and terrestrial habitats, collection and analysis of meteorological and oceanographic conditions, and a complete photographic recording of the island’s various habitats. Coastal Systems then prepared a detailed environmental assessment to determine the impacts that development would have on the island’s ecosystem and the adjacent island communities in the Turks and Caicos. Coastal Systems finalized the report and submitted it to the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands as part of the overall permitting process. Coastal Systems is now heavily involved with the construction of a deep-water approach channel, a marina with supporting services and facilities and runway upgrades compliant with international specifications.
