|Opening Week Showcases New World Symphony’s Campus
Tuesday, January 25th kicks off 6 days of celebratory events for the opening of the New World Symphony’s new campus in Miami Beach. After opening ceremonies, the orchestra will perform under Musical Director Michael Tilson Thomas. Simultaneously, the world premiere of video art commissioned by New World Symphony – a collaboration between artist and filmmaker Tal Rosner and digital software designer Casey Reas – will play on the exterior wall of the building. Live wallcasts of the opening ceremonies and the public concerts Jan. 27 and Jan. 28 will broadcast free into the public park adjacent to the hall. The park outside New World Symphony’s new campus reflects the spirit and vitality of Miami Beach, and the park will be known as Soundscape.
Coastal Systems International is part of the planning and design team for the public park led by the Dutch architectural firm, West 8. Civil Engineering and environmental permitting services were provided by Coastal Systems for the 132,592 sf urban park which is bounded by Washington Avenue, Lincoln Lane and the New World Center. One of the park’s main features is the proximity to the New Word Symphony’s 7,500 sf (75 feet by 100 feet) projection wall on the front of the building that will look out over Soundscape. According to the City of Miami Beach, after dark the projection wall will provide a canvas for concerts, video art, film and concerts playing inside New World Symphony. Built on the site of a former City parking lot, Miami Beach Soundscape’s design modified the site topography to create an unfolding, undulating sequence of spaces. The $13M park project was constructed on schedule and on budget to coincide with the grand opening of the New World Center campus.
