Middle Beach Dune Restoration, Florida

Coastal Systems International, Inc. evaluated the condition of the existing dune system between 21st Street and 79th Street in Miami Beach and developed a design to increase the health of the dune by altering the vegetation. Specifically, Coastal Systems prepared a vegetation survey that mapped the existing dune vegetation, noting areas of invasive and protected species. The vegetation survey was based on both aerial photography and multiple site assessments.

Using the vegetation survey, a planting plan was developed to remove invasive species, plant barren and sparse dune areas with native, salt-tolerant species, close unnecessary east-west beach access paths, and thin out overgrown vegetation at access points for pedestrian safety. The planting design was developed to be adaptive, noting multiple native species that could be used interchangeably based on market availability.

Post construction site assessments were conducted immediately after installation and approximately three months after installation. An additional site survey will be conducted approximately nine months after installation to note progress and the survival percentages.
